A San Francisco jury convicted a man of assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery and other charges in connection with a 2023 incident in which he slashed a woman's neck in an unprovoked attack in the city's Inner Sunset neighborhood. Prosecutors said Roberto Lopez walked past the victim on the 1200 block of Funston Avenue in July of 2023 and slashed the left side of her neck without provocation. Lopez, 31, was arrested just minutes after the incident about four blocks away. The knife used in the attack was found on the pathway Lopez walked after fleeing the scene. The woman was hospitalized and required 16 stitches. Lopez was scheduled to be sentenced in late June and was in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.
Impact: The conviction provides some measure of justice for a victim of a violent crime in the Inner Sunset, a neighborhood where residents have expressed concerns about street safety.
